Types of Dog Nail Clippers Available for your Poodle
Scissor Type Dog Nail Clipper
The scissor type clipper is generally used for very small dogs with tiny nails.
Guillotine Dog Nail Clipper
Preferred by some pet owners because it’s easy to see exactly where you’re clipping.
Make sure you have a sharp blade.
This kind of trimmer can crush the nail if it’s dull because it cuts from one side only.
Plier Dog Nail Clipper
Professional Pet Groomers and Veterinarians tend to prefer this style of clipper for dog nail trimming.
It’s available in small, medium or large sizes. Choose the size that fits your poodle.
It cuts from both sides and is less likely to crush your poodle’s nail.
Quick-Finder Deluxe Dog Nail Clippers
This is another plier type nail clipper which has a sensor that detects the quick in the dog’s nail and turns from red to green when it’s safe to cut.
Each of these dog nail clippers comes in a variety of sizes for small, medium and large dogs.
Other Dog Nail Trimming Tools
In the unfortunate event that you do cut into the quick while trimming dog nails, be sure to have Styptic Powder nearby to press onto the nail.
It stops the bleeding quickly and also contains a medication that helps relieve the pain.
I use Bio-Groom Styptic Powder, but there are other brands available that are just as effective.
If this is not available, you can substitute with flour or cornstarch.
Dog Nail Filing Tools
Use a Dog Nail Grinder or a Dog Nail File to remove any rough edges after clipping.
Some pet groomers skip the clipper altogether and just use the nail grinder to trim and smooth the nails in one step.
Here’s a great demonstration of the Dog Nail Grinder by Julie Harris at YouTube channel “Groomers”.
Last But Not Least –
Yummy Dog Treats! Have a supply of your dogs’ favorite treats on hand to reward him for cooperation.
Let’s face it – you’re the one who cares about dog nail trimming, not him.
Lacey loves Lean Treats. We pick them up from our Vets office, but they are also available at Amazon.com.
Within these basic styles of dog nail clippers, there is a wide assortment to choose from. I hope this has helped you to determine which type you want to use for your dog nail trimming needs.
